IPL 2026 schedule: What’s causing the delay in BCCI’s announcement?
According to the report, the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections will be the main hurdle for the BCCI. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala And Pondicherry. Since the elections will take place in April and May, they overlap almost perfectly with the IPL season. This creates a huge security challenge for teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK) And Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
“It is a herculean task to rearrange the schedule of three teams if some match dates conflict with the election or counting dates. Obviously, the state police will not be able to guarantee the security of the matches, and we will have to move those matches to another location. We are in contact with the authorities and are waiting for some clarity on the dates,” a BCCI official was quoted by InsideSport.
For KKR the situation is even more delicate. Traditionally, when Eden Gardens is not available, the franchise considers Guwahati as a second home. However, with Assam also going to the polls, KKR may have to look further afield, possibly back to other venues, to host their matches. Similarly, with no final election dates, the BCCI is considering releasing the schedule in two parts to avoid mass cancellations and venue shifts.

Impact of 2026 T20 World Cup on Indian Premier League
Politics aside, the physical condition of the stadiums is a pressing concern. Five of the ten primary IPL venues, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Ahmedabadare currently hosting the 2026 T20 World Cup. With the World Cup final scheduled for March 8, 2026, these grounds have less than three weeks to ‘refresh their pitches and recover from the heavy wear and tear of the international game.
“If it takes too long for the dates to be announced, we can release the schedule in two parts. That is an option. We will contact you shortly,” concluded the BCCI official.
This narrow window complicates the first part of the IPL schedule. Grounds like Eden Gardens and MA Chidambaram Stadium need time to breathe to ensure the quality of the playing surface holds up throughout the 74-match IPL season. As a result, teams may be forced to play their opening matches away from home or at neutral venues while their primary squares are restored.
