CSK has already carried out the biggest squad reset of any franchise, releasing a staggering total of eleven players, including prominent foreign stars like Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and the traded Sam Curran. This extensive purge has provided the Super Kings with a strong pocketbook of INR 43.4 crore, giving them significant financial power to rebuild their team. Uthappa’s predictions indicate that CSK will use this deep pocket to acquire high-impact foreign all-rounders, in line with the franchise’s historical preference for multi-utility players.
Robin Uthappa’s two foreign targets for CSK in the IPL 2026 auction
Robin Uthappa specifically mentioned two international all-rounders who he said are CSK’s management, led by the head coach Stefan Flemingwill aggressively pursue the IPL 2026 auction to strengthen their squad. These players, both recently released by their former teams, offer the kind of versatile skills that Chennai has traditionally prized.
- Glenn Maxwell (Australian all-rounder): Uthappa believes CSK will target Maxwell, who was released by Punjab Kings (PBKS). He cited head coach Stephen Fleming’s preference for the Australian, stating: “I know Stephen Fleming likes Maxwell, so maybe they’ll go after him.” Uthappa suggested that CSK are in a unique position to deal with the star, claiming: “He could go there and I think only they (CSK) can handle his personality.” Despite Maxwell’s disastrous season with the bat last year, in which he scored just 48 runs in six innings, Uthappa argued that his value to CSK would be primarily as a bowler. He concluded: “I consider Maxwell more of a bowler than a batsman, especially in the IPL, because he has failed a lot. But as a bowler he has been quite consistent. I think his usefulness as a bowler will be much greater. If he clicks as a batsman, that would be fantastic.”
- Liam Livingstone (English all-rounder): Former batsman Mohammad Kaif, echoing Uthappa’s strategic thinking for CSK, also named a second powerful all-rounder, Livingstone (released from RCB), as a likely target. Kaif advised CSK to focus on both: “So they will be behind people like Livingstone and Maxwell.” Kaif explained that Livingstone, an explosive middle-order batsman and a handy spinner, would be a perfect fit on the Chepauk pitch: “Livingstone also suits Chennai. He could become their sixth bowler batting at five.” He added that the team’s historic success comes from its reliance on deep batting and all-rounders: “CSK has a history of batting deep and looking at all-rounders. Overton played because he can bat, just like Curran. Bravo played for so many years because he was an all-rounder, and so did Albie Morkel.”

The 2025 season was the worst in CSK’s illustrious history, as the team finished bottom of the table (10th place) for the first time since the competition began. The five-time champions posted a dismal record of just four wins from fourteen games and were the first team to be officially eliminated from the play-offs. The campaign unraveled further when he was appointed captain Travel Giikwad was ruled out mid-season due to an elbow injury, forcing him out MS Dhoni to step in as deputy skipper, although even his leadership could not stop the slide.
The team’s batting was a major issue, recording the lowest Powerplay run rate of 8.70 in the entire league. Important foreign openers, Devon Conway (156 runs in six innings) and Rachin Ravindra (191 runs in eight innings), experienced a sharp decline in returns compared to previous seasons. Moreover, CSK suffered an all-time low by losing five home matches at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This disappointing performance directly led to the franchise initiating a massive roster move and making high-profile transactions ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
