The Hawkeyes upset No. 9 Nebraska 57-52, sending Iowa’s student section storming the floor at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. As Hoiberg walked through the handshake line, a fan taking a video rushed over to Hoiberg. The Nebraska coach punched the cell phone, hitting an Iowa staffer in the right ear. The employee quickly turned around and Hoiberg grabbed his arm, pointed to the fan and then continued to shake hands.

“The University of Iowa Athletics Department has implemented its court trespassing guidelines following last night’s Iowa-Nebraska men’s basketball game,” Iowa Athletics said in a statement. “Unfortunately, an individual gained access to the field through a restricted area, directly confronting Coach Hoiberg and placing Nebraska players, coaches and staff in a reactive situation. We apologize for this incident and will review our procedures and safety measures to determine what adjustments may be necessary to further strengthen our protocols and help prevent similar incidents in the future.”
Security stood at the handshake line and the fans celebrated at center court, but the fan snuck between the Iowa bench and the scorer’s table and was chased away by an Iowa official.

Nebraska athletics declined to comment. The Big Ten also released a statement.
“The conference has discussed the situation with both institutions, is taking no action regarding Coach Hoiberg and appreciates the efforts of the Iowa government to address post-game security protocols in the interest of preventing a similar event in the future,” the conference said.
Tuesday’s exchange marked the second time in recent weeks that a legal storm has sparked controversy. After North Carolina fans rushed to the court following their team’s win over Duke on Feb. 7, Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer said a staffer was punched in the face. The ACC imposed a fine of UNC$50,000 in accordance with its due process policy.
