Note from the editors: We are delighted to announce that we have hired a new writer, Nick Rodecap, in the inside of the Hall Staff. Nick is a senior at Indiana University on the Media School. His work will appear in the hall this month.
I grew up on Indiana Basketball. Growing up in Indianapolis as the son of a pride of Iu -Aluin, I have viewed the Hoisiers more often than I can count. Don Fischer’s voice was a fixed value in my household from autumn until spring. I still synchronize my TV with the radio when I look at IU basketball and I know that countless others do the same.
I visited Assembly Hall for the first time in November 2019 and looked at the Archie Miller team with 38 points. Impressed by the pomp and tradition that took place on that hardwood floor, I started to understand why my father is so proud of being an IU graduate.
However, there is nothing left to say about that era of Indiana Basketball.
Six years later I am a senior on the media school who pursues my dreams like a play-by-play broadcaster, but my first love was writing. I started my student media trip on swimming and diving, as well as baseball for the Daily Student from Indiana. I also received my first repetitions at WIUX student Radio as a baseball and softball broadcaster.
During my second year I treated men’s football for the Hoosier network, still writing, but I started to branch in the multimedia world. It was also during my second year that I received my first taste from Big-Game Assembly Hall: I had the privilege of doing Play-by-Play for the Primetime show from Indiana Women’s Basketball with Iowa, that Caitlin Clark’s last visit to Bloomington started her professional career.
The sound was deafening. I could hardly hear myself thinking while I have the game from the high section K.
I spent my junior year with football for HN while calling football and basketball for men for WIUX and I always made sure that I would look in the atmosphere for every broadcast and enjoy the atmosphere. I knew that I should not take the opportunity, because countless other student broadcasters would have done something to be in my position, regardless of the team’s performance.
It fulfilled me with a great sense of pride for my university.
Now that I am a senior, not much has changed in that respect. Last weekend I wrote a column from the same Kinnick Stadium-Eindzone where Elia Sarratt in sprinted for a game-winning touchdown. Next weekend I will be on phone calls from a autzen stage such as Indiana football visit Oregon.
I have always been strong in my beliefs and that is especially true in my writing. My understanding of basketball has grown considerably since I started calling hoops during my second year, and Ideally, this convergence enables me to do my best work so far.
Oh, and I am also a Pacers fan. Mark Boyle is one of my favorite broadcasters. Although last season ended in a painful way, it made me appreciate how awesome this sport can be.
It is an honor to participate in the hall and I look forward to getting the chance that lies for us.
