The only thing faster than fast is immediatelyand with speculative pre-rendering, that’s exactly what you get. Instant loading times when entering, leaving and switching pages in the builder.
For Divi Pros who bounce in and out of the builder all day, this quality of life improvement will really come in handy.
There’s a lot to explore, so let me jump into the builder and give you a full, turnkey tour. 👇
Speculative pre-rendering
⚠️Pay attention: The speculation API is supported by Chromium browsers, such as Chrome, Edge, Opera and many others. Safari and Firerox haven’t implemented it yet. Unfortunately, users of those browsers will have to wait to take advantage of this update.
What is speculative pre-rendering? Long story short: Divi 5 predicts where you’ll navigate based on your mouse movements and pre-displays the destination before you click. By the time you click, the page is already fully loaded. From your perspective, the page loads immediately because it is already loaded in the background.
Divi only pre-renders destinations within its own domain. You will notice immediate load times when entering, exiting and switching to different pages in the builder. Because Divi controls the entire editing experience, we can be “greedy” with pre-renders because there are so few entry and exit points. Spending your time in the builder and using the Page Manager and Command Center to navigate will make your entire website building experience instantaneous!
Immediately enter and leave the builder
Here’s how it works. There are a few places where you can enter the builder. One of them is on the front using the Edit with Divi button in the management bar. As you can see in the video below, Divi starts to pre-render the builder when your mouse approaches the button. When the button is clicked, the builder will load immediately.
Additionally, the output destinations are also pre-displayed when you exit the builder. You can switch back and forth between the builder, the WordPress Editor and the front-end without any delay.
We built pre-rendering into the Command Center. Press Cmd+K to open the command center, then type a destination. Once your navigation command is active, pre-rendering begins. By the time you hit Enter, the page has already loaded and will appear immediately!
It is still useful on slow websites
Let’s consider this scenario. You are using very bad hosting and it takes 5 seconds to load the builder. When you move your mouse to the Edit with Divi button, pre-rendering starts 1.5 seconds before you click it. In this case, the loading time is not instantaneous, but it still shaves 1.5 seconds off the 5-second loading time. Your Divi building experience just got 30% faster; that’s still pretty nice!
You can turn it on or off
If you’d rather not have a few extra requests loading in the background, you can disable pre-rendering in the builder settings.
Each pre-rendering resembles a visitor visiting a page on your website. So if you are concerned about server resources and don’t mind longer load times, you can disable pre-rendering.
