A month later, Farr suffered another heartbreaking loss, this time on the frozen tundra Aqueduct racecourse.
After setting the early pace, Farr’s homebred filly Interstate love song embroiled in a heated stretch duel with Two bits in the Ruthless Stakes at the Big A, but fell a neck short in third place a further 10 lengths behind.
From that narrow loss on February 6 in her stakes debut, the daughter of Bolt d’Oro will attempt to clinch a spot in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) as she faces four rivals in the $200,000 Busher Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Feb. 28 at Aqueduct.
“She is a big filly and has done fantastic in her three starts so far. We have high expectations for her. We think she can be very talented. I am very pleased that her owner/breeder Paul Farr has such a good filly,” said trainer Tom Morley. ‘The race conditions probably went against her a bit last time. She has a fantastic mind. She’s very agile, very tractable, and she’s fast too.”
The one-turn mile Busher typically offers 50-25-15-10-5 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points, meaning a win on Saturday should secure her (or one of the runners) a spot in the 14-horse field for the Class 1 showdown at Churchill Downs. However, as a Road to the Kentucky Oaks Championship Series race, it is subject to the field size rule which proportionally awards only 75% of the available points if the race is run with a field of five horses. If the race is held with four or fewer horses, only 50% of the points will be distributed.
Farr, whose Titletown Racing Stables Packers colors are green and yellow with a football on the side, bred Interstatelovesong out of the Distorted Humor mare Gentle Humor and she is a full sister to the stakes-placed Navy Man.
In her first two starts, Interstatelovesong placed second in her debut on November 20 and then won by five lengths in a maiden race on December 26, both at the Big A.
The field also includes the runner-up in Cash Run Stakes Nycon and first winners Current return And Paradise . Paradise and Blowing brat will be included in the Davona Dale Stakes (G2) the same day Gulfstream Park.
Older sprinters collide in Tom Fool
Saturday’s card, led by the Gotham Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds, also features the $175,000 Tom Fool Stakes (G3) for older sprinters.
Morley will aim for a dual effort with LJSS Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and Adelphi Racing Club’s One Nine Hundred a son of Dialed in achieve decisive compensation and optionally claim victory in fast time.
The field of five participants for the 6 furlong sprint also includes that of A. Bianco Holding Acoustic Ave a New York bred one Maclean’s music gelding trained by Linda Rice, who completely dominates the Big A winter competition.
Heading into this week’s race, Rice has 39 wins, which is more than the combined total of 33 of the five trainers ranked second through sixth on the wins list.
