‘The fight is not over’

Following the goals of UNESCO’s intercultural project The routes of peoples made to slaveIt should offer an opportunity for collective consideration of the historical causes, the methods and the consequences of this tragedy and for an analysis of the interactions to which it gave rise between Africa, Europe, America and the Caribbean, said the UN agency that leads the annual commemoration.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said that while the day honors the victims of the transatlantic slave trade, “the battle is not over.”

“Modern slavery remains,” they stated. “Let us confront the injustice, past and present and maintain the dignity and rights of each person.”

For its part, the UN is working on these goals, including by its Outreach program on the transatlantic slave trade and slaveryFounded in 2007.

Rebellion led to abolition

In the night from 22 to 23 August 1791, in the then Saint Domingue, now Haiti, saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

Against this background, the International Day is commemorated around the world. It was first celebrated in a number of countries, including in 1998 in Haiti and in 1999 on Gorée Island in Senegal, where millions of slaves made on ships were forced to cross the ocean.

“Let’s remember the victims and freedom fighters from the past today, so that they can inspire future generations to only build societies,” said Mrs. Azoulay of UNESCO.
