Newcastle 2 Brentford 3 – Saturday 7 February 2026 5.30pm
Direct fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘Beaten by a team that looked fitter and faster on the day.
Every time Brentford broke forward it looked like they could score.
There’s no stopping this season, we’ll be back at it again on Tuesday evening. Let’s hope for a better away performance and regain some confidence in Villa and Qarabag.’
Billy Miller:
‘For the first time I’m really worried about our Premier League season.
We’ve been floating around mid-table a lot this campaign, but it’s always been a win or two from fourth or fifth.
Today we finish 11 points behind 4th place and 6 points below our conquerors in 7th place.
In the first half we seemed completely devoid of confidence. The poor penalty decision didn’t help, but I thought we got away with the first.
Things looked better in the second half, but even when we were level, I feared the worst.
Shocking defensive form to face the decider.
This was a must win if you look at our upcoming games, and we haven’t done it nearly enough.
Tuesday is the battle of the underachievers.’
GTone:
‘That was embarrassing. This no longer becomes an immediate reaction, but a constant reaction.
This team is now becoming a waste of time due to lack of investment at the right time and lack of tactical intelligence from the manager.
I really don’t care how we do against the tote bag.
That’s a money spinner in a cup we won’t win.
The competition is the main focus and it should always be that way, and this season we have been terrible apart from the odd game.
The money spent on forwards has been thrown down the drain. Wissa is hopeless and BNW is not a CF.
In the meantime. on the other hand, Pope is still trying to save shots with his legs instead of his hands.
Tbh, what’s the point.
There needs to be a major clean-up in the summer, from top to bottom.
If we want to get to the next level, it’s a level that half the team and the manager can’t reach.”
Matt Busby said…:
‘Abject.
We scored against the flow of the game and instead of capitalizing we lost our way.
At 2-2 we had a foothold in the match, but still conspired to lose.
We are a team that lacks confidence, concedes far too many soft goals and remains at zero.
I said when we lost to Everton and still qualified for the Champions League that I would have preferred to be in one of those lesser UEFA competitions, the Champions League has become an albatross around our necks.
Spurs are huge on Tuesday, for both clubs.”
David Punton:
‘The recession continues. Are we on the slide?
After Newcastle United you always have to take the rough and the smooth.
Here we suffered another defeat in a five-goal thriller, with the Londoners striking late to take all three points.
Midweek felt like something from the Ashley era and this was also a bit of a throwback.
It has become an uphill battle where progress was once made.”
Tony Mallabar:
‘I’m currently doing my pre Baku detox, so no pre-match light sherries for me for a while.
But the sweet baby Jesus and the orphans. Those gubbins served tonight were enough to make any man fall off the wagon.
As a fan, it makes no sense for me to argue about x, y, and z players.
Now that we are in year 5 of the “program”… having double the amount of Brentford thrown at us was probably not where we all expected to be.
Am I frustrated? YES.
Will I be at Tottenham on Tuesday? Hell YES.”
Greg McPeake:
‘Is Brentford a Premier League club?
They beat us tonight with dodgy VAR and then controlled the minutes given by the inept referee.
Brentford are, in my opinion, a rubbish club, making fun of the so-called big clubs with their kneeling and groveling.
Good luck to the sad Brentford fans who are happy to get a win at a big club tonight but will never compete in real terms.
The sooner we remove Burnley, Bournemouth and Brentford from the Premier League, the better.”
Jamie Smith:
‘This really makes me sick.
I’m just too tired of a counter-attack discovering us, despite better ball possession and more chances etc.
This league season feels completely over and the campaign rests on a Hail Mary in the FA Cup at Villa.
All the problems go back to last summer, but there has been a terrible decline that needs to be looked at.”
