Instagram rolls out the ‘Shots’ options for more users

Instagram has expanded access to the ‘shots’ Quick Image Sharing function to more regions, with which you can record a moment and share it with your connections in the app.

That feels like a stopover of the Beral Trend of 2022 and probably does not seem to tackle the app in an important way, although there might be more going on than I can see.

As you can see in these screenshots, photos is a “no-edit, no-filter” image option, with which you can quickly send a photo to a friend. That friend will only be able to view your image once before it disappears from existence.

So as noted, it is a bit like a mix of Beral and Snapchat, which is designed to cause spontaneous interaction in the app.

Shots can only be shared with followers who follow you back, and no one else can see with whom you have tightened a shot. Your sent photos are stored in your archive, but for the recipient they will disappear after they have been viewed.

Shots have been driving around in experimental mode for some time, with users in some regions gaining access a few months ago. But now it is being extended to more users, because IG is looking for a different way to call on direct involvement and to generate more interaction in the app.

That again feels very Beral-like.

Instagram has actually tried several other Beneal-like functions at the height of the popularity of Bereal, including ‘Candid’, which Beral immediately replicated, and a few other experiments in the moment that the live production has never reached. Shots feel like a remnant of these tests, which also holds the popularity of notes as a more intimate, direct engagement function that could cause more in the app.

Will that work? Well, as noted, I personally don’t see it becoming an important factor, but perhaps, in view of the popularity of notes, there is a demand for fast partial options in the app, which can bring more people to keep in touch via IG connection.

It seems like a small element, but perhaps one to look as more regions get access.

Also interesting: Tiktok also tests a similar option for sharing images with the name “Photoswap”, ” So there are clearly some user indicators to support this.

We have asked Instagram for more information about the rollout of photos and we will update this message if we hear again.
