Insider reveals unexpected change in Brock Boeser’s trade situation

TSN insider Darren Dreger reports that Brock Boeser’s name is hitting the trade market just days before the NHL Trade Deadline. While it is known that the Vancouver Canucks are being sold, it may come as a bit of a surprise to hear that Boeser may be moved, especially considering his new seven-year contract extension.

However, it appears that Boeser is not completely closed off to the idea of a trade.

“I think it’s interesting that Brock Boeser’s name is there,” Dreger said Thursday edition of Insider Trading. “I mean, this guy just signed a seven-year contract with the Canucks on July 1. Is he ready to move now? Well, he is, if there’s an offense that makes sense for Boeser and his family. He’s a playoff performer, so teams are going to show some interest.”

Despite Vancouver signing him to a new seven-year extension worth $50.75 million (AAV $7.25 million) on July 1, 2025, Boeser is open to waiving his no-movement clause if there is a location that works for him and a fit that makes sense for him and his family. There will be interest from teams, even if Boeser is having a bit of a down season. His reputation as a strong player in the playoffs and the fact that he is locked into a reasonable contract are all positives.

In 51 games this season, Boeser has only 12 goals and 14 assists. He’s on pace for a career-low 39 points.

Canucks could be active in the coming days

Expect conversations to surround the Canucks with trade talk involving multiple players. Among them, the Canucks are waiting for Tyler Myers to part with his NMC (with Detroit the likely target). Evander Kane (non-NMC) is expected to move if a team is willing to give up an asset to lease him.

As for Boeser, he never wanted to leave the Canucks. But the way things are going, it appears he’s seen the writing on the wall and may have signed on long-term for a team that isn’t good for a long time.
