The Edmonton Oilers and St. Louis Blues are among the more eager teams in the NHL to shake up their respective rosters. Edmonton’s urgency to improve in goal has increased in recent days thanks to the continued struggles of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, and that has them tied to St. Louis, especially regarding a potential blockbuster deal involving goaltender Jordan Binnington.
Nick Kypreos recently stirred the hornet’s nest by suggesting the two were linked and followed that up on the Kyper and Bourne Show on Friday, telling David Amber: “St. Louis is vulnerable. They’re not going to sign him to a long-term contract. He wants to play longer. There’s a history, you know, there’s a chemistry with McDavid from 4 Nations. He’s considered a gamer, like rolling the dice on a goalie.” out there, I think it should be Binnington.
While Binnington makes a lot of sense for the Oilers to target a trade, TSN insider Chris Johnston has been told that their recent history, specifically the offer sheets the Blues made to land Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg, could throw a wrench into those discussions.

“A team like the Edmonton Oilers needs to look at all their options. I had someone tell me this week that they don’t think there’s any way the Oilers and Blues can do a trade like this given the recent history with the offer sheets. We’ll see. But someone put it in my ear yesterday that maybe we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves in pairing those two teams up,”
The 32-year-old Binnington is in the fifth season of the six-year, $36 million extension he signed to stay in St. Louis in 2021.
If not Jordan Binnington, then who?
While this makes a trade between the Oilers and Blues harder to imagine, a deal that sends Binnington to Edmonton still shouldn’t be ruled out, especially given the desperation surrounding both teams.
That said, if Binnington is unlikely, Tristan Jarry appears to be the number one option on the market unless Juuse Saros is more available than Barry Trotz is letting on.
We should also keep an eye on Laurent Brossoit, who has been mentioned as a cheaper option if the Oilers struggle to land one of the bigger goaltenders.
There’s a lot going on right now, but it feels like we might finally see someone other than Skinner or Pickard between the pipes in Edmonton.
