Insider pours cold water on Owen Tippett trade rumors

According to insider Elliotte Friedman, recent talk linking Owen Tippett to trade talks appears to be exaggerated. Speaking Morning Cuppa hockey, Friedman said he doesn’t believe the Philadelphia Flyers want to move the 25-year-old winger, despite recent trade speculation.

Tippett scored a pair of goals in the Flyers’ recent win over Seattle, and there is a lot to like about the player, even if he can be inconsistent at times. “I don’t think the Flyers want to trade Owen Tippett,” Friedman said, adding that the rumor likely started when his name came up in specific conversation or as part of exploratory talks. “It’s more likely someone asked about Tippett, or maybe the Flyers were looking at something else and his name came up.”

The Flyers have been looking for help on defense, especially after head coach Rick Tocchet expressed concerns about his blue line during the preseason. Friedman suggested that Tippett’s name may have come up during those investigations, but emphasized that the organization is not actively shopping him.

Friedman clarified, “I didn’t hear his name come up, so this seems to me because it was about a certain team or a certain situation, and his name may have been mentioned in a report or someone finds out, and then we go from there.”

Tippett, who scored 20 goals and 43 points last season, also scored 28 goals and 53 points in the 2023-24 season. He remains an important part of Philadelphia’s young core. For now, it seems like any talk of the Flyers trading him is more of a rumor than a reality.
