Jack Roslovic’s late-summer signing with the Edmonton Oilers continues to generate intrigue, not only because of its value, but also its built-in flexibility. As reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman the 32 thoughts podcast (October 13), the forward’s one-year, $1.5 million contract contains a unique clause that could shape his near-term future in Edmonton.
“November 1… around the time Zach Hyman comes back, it will be a four-team trade list,” Friedman said. “It’s almost a test to see if everyone here is happy, and I assume the teams on that list are the ones who were watching him too.”
That means Roslovic’s deal through October includes a full no-move clause (including not being placed on waivers), essentially keeping him in place for the first month of the season. After that, the Oilers will get some flexibility if things don’t go as planned, while Roslovic will retain control over his destination if a trade happens.
For now it is an opportunistic situation. Roslovic, 28, joined the Oilers after spending much of the summer out of contract and skating on his own. He has described Edmonton as a place where he can prove himself, potentially earn a longer look and contribute to a contending lineup.
The short-term deal works as a low-risk gamble for general manager Stan Bowman and the Oilers – a way to add depth and experience without long-term commitments. But Friedman’s insight suggests the Oilers had no intention of committing to Roslovic long-term unless he proved himself. The Oilers think he can be helpful, but time will tell. Both parties are keeping options open, with November becoming a key checkpoint to determine whether the fit continues beyond the initial ‘trial phase’.
