Goaltender Joseph Woll left Thursday’s game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes before the start of the third period due to a lower-body injury. The severity of Woll’s injury was unknown as the netminder did not return to the game. According to head coach Craig Berube, “We’ll see tomorrow.”
When asked how serious the injury could be, Berube replied: “Right now I can’t give you that answer. I really don’t know. Hopefully not, but I really liked the way Beast came in and handled it. Dennis Hildeby came on, made nine saves and didn’t allow a goal in a 5-1 win for Toronto.”
The injury news is obviously not good for the Maple Leafs. Anthony Stolarz still hasn’t skated since Nov. 11, leaving the Leafs behind their two starting netminders.
The Maple Leafs will now rely on Hildeby to take on a much bigger role. Even though Woll’s injury isn’t serious and the fact that he’s struggled consistently this season and Stolarz isn’t available, the Leafs have to wonder what happens with their goaltending situation.
