The rice purchase of India in the 2024-25 season (October-September) reached 545.22 Lakh Ton (LT) until August 31, against 525.22 LT a year ago. Due to higher purchasing, the government is now planning a route map to throw away as much excess grain as possible. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already enabled traders to buy at least 1 ton of rice directly from a depot at the spare price.

According to the latest data, the rice buying of the current year included around 474 LT of Kharif-Grugged crop and about 71 LT of the Rabi season. The target of purchasing for Kharif -crop was 511.57 LT and that for the Rabi season was 73.23 Lt.

In Tamil Nadu, where rice is also an important harvest of the Rabi season, the center has bought 28.26 LT (of both seasons) at a target of 28.24 Lt. Rice -purchasing in Telangana reached 71.25 LT a year ago against 63.86 LT. The target of 35 LT from the Rabi season has been exceeded in Telangana, says sources.

Annual question

The center has each been able to buy 10 LT rice from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as a target for the Rabi season. This helped to take the total purchase of rice from both Kharif and Rabi seasons in Andhra Pradesh to 25.60 LT and in Odisha up to 50.12 Lt.

The annual requirement under different diagrams, including the Public Distribution System (PDS), is around 410 LT and the buffer standard is 102.5 LT on October 1, while the transfer supply at the government was almost 380 LT rice and 213.52 LT of Non -Paddy (or 143 LT rice) will still be a problem.

According to data, the FCI has bought 19.91 LT rice from West Bengalen, 26.28 LT in Bihar, 38.66 LT of Uttar Pradesh, 29.16 LT from Madhya Pradesh, 116.13 LT of Punjab and 36.17 LT of Haryana.

In Chhattisgarh, an important contribution to the Central Pool, purchasing ended on January 31 and the center bought 78 LT against 83 LT years ago.

Bonus payment complicates

Sources said that Chhattisgarh and Odisha paid a bonus about Paddy MSP and bought at £ 3,100/Quintal, who can jump further this year when the States decide to match the rise in the center in MSP. The center has dissolved the Paddy MSP for 2025-26 at £ 2,389/Quintal, an increase of £ 2,320/Quintal in the previous year.

In the meantime, the FCI has started selling rice from its depot directly to traders at £ 2,800/Quintal in which a trader can lift 1-9 tons at a time, says sources. The scheme, which is valid in large states of rice consumers, will help traders an option to buy and let the grain pass on to the market for retail sales, says sources.

The government has already reserved 52 LT rice for distilleries to make ethanol and it will be sold at £ 23.20/kg from November.
