A 24-year-old Indian wife and her 56-year-old father were shot in a department store in Virginia, the US, where they had worked. The shooting took place on Thursday, shortly after the store was opened in Accomack County.
The police have arrested George Frazier Devon Wharton (44) for the double murder. According to reports, the accused reached the store early on Thursday morning to buy drinks and asked why the store was closed at night. He then opened fire in the father-daughter duo. While Pradep Patel died on the spot, his daughter Urmi succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Pradep Patel, his wife Hansaben and their daughter Urmi come from the Mehsana district of Gujarat and moved to the US six years ago. They had worked in the supermarket owned by a family member, Paresh Patel. Paresh Patel said to Wavy TV in Virginia and said that the two victims were his family members. “My cousin’s wife and her father worked this morning. A man came here and just shot. I don’t know what to do,” he said. Pradep Patel and Hansaben have two more daughters – one lives in Canada, the other in Ahmedabad.
Accused Wharton is accused of murder in the first degree and other sections, including crime and arms laws.
The double murder has shocked the Indian community in the US. It comes months after Mainank Patel, a 36-year-old man from the Indian Origin who runs a supermarket in North Carolina, was shot dead during a robbery on the site.
