Indian-American business leader and philanthropist Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon hailed India’s growing push in the field of artificial intelligence and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to prioritize AI and organize the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
The summit will focus on the practical use of AI by integrating it into our daily lives, including healthcare, agriculture, language skills technologies, innovation and digital infrastructure. Tandon is a leading philanthropist and a Grammy award-winning artist who appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his efforts to prioritize the use of AI.
“I welcome this whole idea that we are trying to use AI for the benefit of all sectors of society, and that is a stated aim of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and all broader initiatives,” Tandon told PTI on Tuesday.
Global technology leaders are participating
More than 100 international leaders will attend the global summit, which will be the first-ever global AI summit hosted in the Global South and will focus on the principles of ‘People, Planet, and Progress’.
Technology leaders from Sam Altman, Bill Gates and Sundar Pichai will attend the summit, which brings together government, industry and expertise in this field.
‘India takes AI seriously’
“This is an opportunity to not only have conversations on the formal agenda, but the informal interactions this creates will stimulate many interesting collaborations and innovation,” Tandon said.
“It also signals to the world that India is taking AI seriously. Given the demographic dividend we have as a country, it is a great opportunity for India to leverage that and give gifts to the world. Because I think India’s knowledge will not be limited within India. Everyone can learn from it,” she added.
Establishment of Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence at IIMA
Tandon’s contribution to the Indian education system in the field of AI continues to be an important step towards progress and development. Last week, Tandon and his husband Ranjan Tandon, an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and Harvard Business School and founder and chairman of Libra Advisors, exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) for the establishment of the Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence at the prestigious institution.
The school will be established with a generous donation of Rs 100 crore by Tandon, who is also an alumna of the 1975 IIMA batch. She called the establishment of the special school of artificial intelligence at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad a “real milestone for India” and underlined that India’s lessons on translational AI will be of great importance to the world.
“This will create a school of data science and AI at IIM Ahmedabad, my alma mater, and it will be the first of its kind in a management institution. I think it is a real milestone for India. The focus of this school will be on translational research to look at how AI will impact different management segments, different management functions and different industry verticals,” she said.
From agriculture to healthcare to education
“From agriculture to healthcare to education, this will really look at what the specific problems are and what AI will do about them,” she added.
The MoU was exchanged on January 29, in the presence of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Ambassador Vinay Kwatra, virtually in the US.
Pradhan said the MoU in the run-up to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 is a “solid reflection” of the concrete actions the country is taking to become a global AI superpower.
Increasing India’s AI capabilities
He expressed confidence in the Krishnamurthy Tandon School of Artificial Intelligence that it will work towards “boosting India’s AI capabilities and democratizing AI advancements in India.”
Tandon emphasized that there will be a lot of focus on creating a new kind of thinker. There will be advances in critical, ethical and emotional thinking. “These are some of the issues that will change governance and management,” she said, adding that AI will upend many functions and the future will look a little different.
“Ultimately, the goal of all this is to be able to help solve the challenges facing India and make them accessible. If we have great leaders, they can make better techniques available to the rest of their organizations, the country and society,” she said.
