India in panic mode? Piyush Chawla leaves batters shaking ahead of the match against West Indies

Ahead of the crucial clash between India and West Indies at the Eden Gardens for the semi-final of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla has advised the Indian team not to aim for huge totals as that could often lead to them being dismissed with a fairly short number of runs.

India have won their second match against Zimbabwe and West Indies, on the other hand, have lost the match to South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, making the India vs West Indies match a do-or-die match for both of these two teams.

However, there is one condition that is not talked about much. What happens if the match is canceled due to rain? In such a case, India will be eliminated and West Indies will be through due to their high run percentage compared to the Men in Blue.

“Whichever team is thinking of 220-230 can be bundled for 160,” Piyush Chawla opined.

Ahead of the crucial clash between India and West Indies that will seal the World Cup fate for the two teams, cricketer and commentator Piyush Chawla believes that if either of the two teams go into the game thinking of a huge score, they are likely to collapse before reaching the par scores.

The former spinner, who was part of KKR for many years of his IPL career, has played extensively at the Eden Gardens and is well aware of the dynamics of the ground. When Chawla was asked if a total of 220-230 runs can be expected from two of the best batting units in this T20 World Cup, he dropped a shocking opinion.

“The World Cup pressure is a little different. So teams are not going to score 220-230 there. Even if you score 190 there, that pressure makes it 210, and whatever team is thinking of 220-230 can be bundled for 160,” he replied.

“A lot depends on how the team starts on the power play.” – Piyush Chawla

The spinner further claimed that the powerplay score would be a deciding factor on how big the final score would be. This seems clear from his words that he only believes batters would have the upper hand here at the Eden Gardens.

“So the thought process is very important there. A lot depends on how the team starts in the powerplay. But you are never going to be in such a high-pressure game thinking about 220-230,” Chawla noted.

West Indies recorded the third highest total in ICC T20 World Cup history in their Super-8 match against Zimbabwe in this edition, and India passed them with a total of 256 runs against the same opponent in their second Super-8 match.

Piyush Chawla is betting big on Indian spinners for the clash against West Indies

Since the former World Cup winner with India believes that the batters of either of these two teams can handle the powerplay as well as the death overs, the middle overs will be a decisive moment in the match.

“The middle overs will be very crucial in this match. The teams will play pretty much the same in the powerplay and the last five to six overs because the Eden Gardens pitch is like this and the ground is a bit small,” he opined.

Pinning his hopes on Indian spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel, he opined that India will have the upper hand in the innings if they can control the game without leaking much during the middle phase.

“However, in the middle-over phase, if the Indian spinners bowl restrictively there, where Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel will play a big role, the Indian team can exert their dominance over the West Indian batters there,” Chawla noted.
