India and Australia agreed on Monday (March 17, 2025) to further deepen cooperation and interoperability in maritime, land and air domains, including working with multilateral partners. Moreover, the two countries also decided to concentrate on cooperation in the consciousness of maritime domain, sharing mutual information, industry and science and technological cooperation, apart from “exchanges including implementations from each other’s areas”.
This was agreed in the 9th India-Australia Defense Policy Talks in New Delhi. The Indian delegation was led by joint secretary Amitabh Prasad, while the Australian side was led by First Assistant Secretary International Policy Division, Department of Defense, Australia, Bernard Philip. The previous edition of the conversations was held in 2023.
“Both parties welcomed persistent progress in bilateral defense cooperation, including the growing frequency and complexity of defense exercises and exchanges. It included various first milestones, the completion of important similarities and participation in each other’s most important exhibitions of Defense Handels, ”said a statement from the Ministry of Defense. The two parties also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual importance.
The meeting assessed the defense results of the second ministerial foreign and ministers of the Minister of Defense in November 2023, Inter-Sessional 2+2 consultation at secretary level in October 2024 and the second annual leaders’ top in November 2024, the ministry said.
The two parties corresponded to priorities and preparations for the next 2+2 ministerial dialogue that will be held in Australia later this year. “Both countries also investigated the possibilities of cooperation between the defense industry. They called on the respective agencies to both parties for acceleration cooperation in the field of cooperation in the field of Defense Sciences and technology, ”says the statement.
The relationship between India-Australia has seen a transformation over the past decade and the defense has emerged as an important pillar of the extensive strategic partnership.
The Australian delegation is planned to Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. To visit in Mumbai and the Australian co-chairman will appeal to Minister of Defense Rajesh Kumar Singh.
