Harshit was found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to provoking an aggressive reaction or belittling by a batsman upon dismissal during an international match, caused by language, gestures and/or actions by the bowler or another teammate.
The event took place during the 22nd over of South Africa’s chase in the Ranchi encounter when India bowler gestured to South Africa’s Dewald Brevis to leave for the dressing room after the latter was dismissed. Match referee Richie Richardson took note of this gesture and chastised Rana for his provocative comment.
In his response, Rana accepted the sanction without challenge, after which Richardson added a demerit point to the cricketer’s disciplinary record. It is worth noting that this was Rana’s first breach of the Code of Conduct in the last twenty-four months, and therefore the points will remain in effect for a period of 24 months after the date the breach first occurred.
Talking about Rana’s performance in the first ODI, the right-arm pacer was brilliant with the ball for the Men in Blue as his 3/65 in a high-scoring thriller ensured India did not let the visitors cross the finish line in the second innings. His three-wicket haul also included a pair of strokes in his second over himself where he got the better of Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kockwith Brevis of course being his third wicket of the evening.
