IND vs SA 2025: Former India coach proposes bold statement to get result in Guwahati Test | CricTracker

Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri has urged India to leave even 100 runs behind South Africa’s first innings total to try and secure a potential win in the second Test of the ongoing two-match series. The hosts trailed Stumps by 480 runs on Day 2 of the Test.

His comments came after the end of the second day of play. The ex-head coach felt that even leveling the Proteas score of 489 might take a little longer than expected, something which may not work in favor of the Indian team who are trailing in the series after losing the opening match in Calcutta.

+ see how it turns out,” said Shastri during an interaction on Star Sports.

So far, there have been 33 instances of teams forfeiting while trailing in Test cricket. However, only three of those decisions paid off and led to victories. Speaking of India, they have made four such statements.

Their only defeat came in 1948 against Australia in Melbourne, after they declared while still trailing by 103 points. All three other times – 41 runs behind Pakistan in Faisalabad (1978), 1 run behind England in Kanpur (1982) and 4 runs behind England in Nagpur (2012) – both teams finished with honours.

Only time will tell whether standby skipper Rishabh Pant and the coaching staff think it right to declare early if they come close to South Africa’s total. At the end of the match on the second day, India were 9/0 in 6.1 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul at the crease.
