IND vs SA 2025: Controversy arises over Jasprit Bumrah’s 100th T20I wicket – Did the third umpire misunderstand?

Jasprit Bumrah achieved a rare milestone in Cuttack. He took his 100th T20I wicket in the first match against South Africa and became the first Indian to take 100 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

The moment came in the 11th over of the South African chase. Dewald Brevis tried to lift a long ball and ended up making a simple catch at extra coverage. What should have been a clean milestone turned into a talking point within seconds.

The third umpire checked Bumrah’s front foot for a possible ‘no ball’. The side angle did not clearly show any part of the foot behind the line. After a long look, the decision still went in favor of the bowler. Commentator Pommie Mbangwa said it “looked like a no-ball” and fans on X questioned the decision. Many felt that Brevis should have survived and that the referee was inconsistent.

An X user wrote: “Dewald Brevis is not out, it is not a ball”

Another user wrote: “No way he reached 100th t20i wkt with probably no ball”

Here are some reactions from fans about the missing ball controversy

The incident did not change the match situation. South Africa were already 68 for 6 and needed 107 runs from the last 10 overs. India kept the pressure on. Bumrah, Axar, Arshdeep and Varun Chakravarthy took two wickets each. South Africa were bowled out for 74, their lowest score in T20Is.

India were sharp with both ball and field. This match was the series opener and both teams discussed using the matches as preparation for the T20 World Cup. For India, Bumrah’s milestone added to the excitement even if it was accompanied by discussions about technology and refereeing decisions.
