Shubman Gill arrived in Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa but his chances of playing still look slim. The India captain is recovering from a neck injury that forced him out of the first Test.
Gill walked out after just three balls on Day 2 in Kolkata. He later required hospital care and was seen wearing a neck brace at the airport. He was not wearing it when he landed in Guwahati, which is a small positive sign, but the medical team is still keeping a close eye on him.
India are trailing 0-1 in the series after losing the first Test by 30 runs. The team will be hoping for a quick turnaround, but management is clear they do not want to put Gill at risk. With a long season ahead, they don’t want him to return until he is fully fit.
Reports suggest that Gill is most likely to miss the second Test, and he could even be ruled out of the ODI series that follows. If he is not available, the team can turn to Sai Sudharsan or Devdutt Padikkal to fill the top spot.
Rishabh Pant, who led the side after Gill’s departure in the first Test, is expected to captain again. Pant was able to get the job done well under pressure and players believe his energy is helping the group stay positive.
Although Gill has been discharged from the hospital, the BCCI medical team is taking it easy. The injury came at an unfortunate time for him, as he had made good contact earlier in the match.
