As Samson walked towards the airport exit, Suryakumar brazenly asked everyone not to disturb him, call him ‘Chetta’ (elder brother in Malayalam), and make way when Samson reached his hometown. Samson started smiling after Suryakumar’s comments. Meanwhile, the upcoming fifth T20I will be India’s last match before the crucial 2026 T20 World Cup campaign.
‘Make way, make way, please. Don’t disturb Chetta,” Suryakumar said.
Samson received the backing of the selectors over Shubman Gill for the opener spot in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand and was also backed for the upcoming T20 World Cup. However, the talented wicketkeeper-batsman has struggled to make the most of his opportunities so far. Samson has managed to score just 40 runs in four matches against the Kiwis, failing to make a significant contribution at the top of the table.
Given his current form, questions are beginning to arise as to whether the team management will continue to back Samson after successive failures. His struggles are not limited to the ongoing series as he also had a disappointing season in 2025, scoring 222 runs in 15 matches at an average of 20.18.
The fifth and final T20I of the series is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. After the conclusion of the series, India will begin its T20 World Cup campaign against the United States of America at the Wankhede Stadium on February 7. They will next face Namibia in Delhi on February 12, Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, and the Netherlands in Ahmedabad on February 18.
