In a shock move, PCB appoints Test captain Shan Masood as the new Director of International Cricket Operations

Trial captain Shan Masood will now take on a dual role after being appointed the new Director of International Cricket Operations by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Recently, he led Pakistan in the two-match Test series against South Africa which ended in a 1-1 draw.

A PCB source said on Friday that following discussions within the board, there was a clear consensus that Shan is the best man to lead the international cricket affairs department. It is a rare occurrence as not too many individuals have been appointed to an administrator role while playing for the national team.

Sources in Pakistan cricket said the announcement was made by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, which was attended by the Pakistan team and the touring members of the South Africa squad on Friday.

Usman Wahla served in this role before he was recently banned for mishandling the Handshakegate during the Asia Cup competition between India and Pakistan in Dubai last month. He was subsequently reinstated, but his second innings will end prematurely. Reports suggest that after Masood’s appointment, he would be transferred to another division, most likely the Pakistan Super League.

“This is a multi-dimensional leadership role, with emphasis on management of the Pakistan team and supervision of international cricket operations. The main functions of the incumbent are to plan, organise, execute and supervise international tours,” PCB said in its recent advertisement for the post.

Former Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq was reportedly the frontrunner to take the position. However, it ultimately goes to 36-year-old Masood.

The left-handed batsman made his international debut in 2013. He played 44 Tests, nine ODIs and 19 T20Is. He is not eligible for white-ball formats but the PCB has shown confidence in him when it comes to Test matches.

After drawing the Test series, Pakistan will now play three T20Is against the Proteas. South Africa’s tour of Pakistan ends with a three-match ODI series.
