Implications for the potential Justin Gaethje vs. Ilia Topuria lightweight clash | MMA UK

With the conclusions of UFC 324 and 325, the new year has arrived, offering fans some good matchups to start 2026 off right. The lightweight division saw an interesting matchup between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett in the main event of UFC 324. While many fans in the mixed martial arts community thought there were more deserving contenders, the fight still delivered action. The battle between Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett was a contrasting clash that highlighted Justin’s experienced, smart approach against a young but hungry Paddy “The Baddy”. From an observational point of view, neither fighter used decisive tactics that could lead to an easier outcome; although Justin Gaethje’s pressure and strength were enough to keep him comfortably in front. The fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett was criticized by other fighters, such as Rafael Fiziev, who expressed concern about the possible match between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje in the near future (Steelchinmma, 2026). Justin vs. Ilia will represent the significance of Gaethje’s legacy within the UFC and the organization’s matchmaking priorities.

However long a potential match between Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria lasts, it has all the ingredients for an entertaining fight. Ilia Topuria is considered one of the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artists in the world according to the official rankings, while Justin Gaethje is often seen as someone who is in the latter stages of his career and is somewhat declining in his technical skills (UFC, n.d.; Steelchainmma, 2026). Despite Justin Gaethje’s three wins from four fights since 2023, he is once again overlooked as an underdog (UFC, nd; Lee, 2026).

Topuria is undoubtedly the younger man with more momentum and signature wins. He is physically faster and statistically the better fighter defensively with a striking defense percentage of 64% (UFC, nd; ESPN MMA, nd). According to data collected by the UFC(n.d.), Justin Gaethje appears to be landing more than Ilia, but he’s taking one to give one, reinforcing why many mixed martial arts experts conclude this is a dangerous fight for Justin Gaethje. Ilia is the more versatile fighter in terms of showcasing different skills during a fight and is also the more technically solid fighter. However, Gaethje could pose problems for Topuria if he is able to consistently land leg kicks without being countered when closing the distance. It’s a tall order against a fighter who does the kind of damage Ilia Topuria does in a fight.

Justin Gaethje’s interim title victory against Paddy Pimblett moves him to number seven, alongside Charles Oliveira, Sean Sherk, Rafael Dos Anjos and Anthony Pettis in lightweight title victories (UFC, nd). Justin Gaethje has shown consistency at the elite level throughout his illustrious career and is a great fighter, but he will face another titan in an undisputed title fight against Ilia Topuria. On paper, this is an uphill battle for Justin Gaethje, who will seemingly be outmatched in skill against an Ilia Topuria who continues to etch his name in UFC history by potentially adding another legend to his resume of title wins. Online sources within the mixed martial arts community speculate that this fight will take place based on the White House card, and if so, Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje will forever be part of UFC history in another historical milestone for the organization (Lindsay, 2026).
