Immediate reaction: Dennis Hildeby shines, records first NHL shutout in 2-0 win over Lightning

‘The Hildebeast’ was the story again, stopping all 29 Tampa Bay Lightning shots he faced for his first NHL shutout. Hildeby showed his entire toolbox against the Bolts, setting the tone early with 15 saves in the first period. The rest was history as Hildeby continued to look like someone who doesn’t want to be an injury reliever and wants to compete for starts no matter who is available.

Morgan Rielly opened the scoring late in the first period with a strong second try. Rielly jumped on a loose puck, failed on the first shot attempt and ended up landing on his stomach and backhanding it into the net. This was Rielly’s fifth goal of the season, and the Leafs will take as much offense as possible on their blueline:

It’s worth noting that Troy Stecher and Jake McCabe continue their strong play. Monday night was one of the best nights of McCabe’s season, he was everywhere and delivered some crushing hits. Stecher has become increasingly comfortable in blue and white and has impressed with his speed and poise with the puck. Berube may have found something here and perhaps Chris Tanev will be paired with Rielly once he returns.

There was a wild sequence early in the third period, and it all started when Lightning forward Gage Goncalves was given a game misconduct for kneeling Leafs defenseman Dakota Mermis. Seconds later, Bobby McMann was assessed a match penalty for hitting Lightning forward Oliver Bjorkstrand over the head in the scrum that followed. McMann was unhappy with the cross-check he received and objected. This wasn’t one of McMann’s best moments with the Leafs and he’ll probably hear this from the league:

Then Bobby McMann received a match penalty for this slash on Oliver Bjorkstrand 😳

Gage Goncalves was given a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for kneeling on Dakota Mermis

And once again the Leafs power play failed to score. While it’s important to consider the positives of battling the Atlantic Division leaders, the power play becomes a huge storyline for all the wrong reasons. It feels like they need to feed Auston Matthews back into the half-wall for as many shots as his wrists can handle and respond from there.

William Nylander hasn’t had a single shot on net or scored a point in his last four games. Calle Jarnkrok dressed in place of Nick Robertson and played just over 10 minutes, putting one shot on net.

The Maple Leafs continue their five-game homestand when the San Jose Sharks come to town on Thursday. After another solid defensive effort and great performance from Hildeby, we’ll wait to see if they can slow down Macklin Celebrini and company.
