Ilia Topuria’s father, Zaza Topuria, has paid tribute to former UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili for inspiring an entire generation and opening the door for others in Georgia to pursue a professional MMA career.

‘The Machine’ is the first Georgia-born champion in UFC history. He captured the 135-pound championship by dethroning Sean O’Malley in 2024. In 2025, he successfully defended his title three times against notable opponents: Umar Nurmagomedov, ‘Suga’ (in a rematch) and Cory Sandhagen.

In December 2025, Merab Dvalishvili attempted to become the first UFC champion to register four successful title defenses in one year at UFC 323. He locked horns with Petr Yan in a rematch but was unsuccessful in his pursuit. The 35-year-old lost to Yan by unanimous decision.

By staying active and going the extra mile when necessary, the promotion has returned the respect, assuring Merab Dvalishvili that he will get a title rematch to finally complete his trilogy with Petr Yan when he is ready.

Recently, Topuria’s father praised him during a candid conversation with Dvalishvili and thanked the latter for what he has done for the country and its people. Zaza Topuria said:

“You were the first to play a big role in this. I want to embrace you with my soul and heart. You have done many things, not only for our family, but for the whole of Georgia, especially for the new generation. Generations will be proud of you.”

Former UFC champion doesn’t mind waiting if Merab Dvalishvili fights Petr Yan next

Last weekend at UFC 324, Sean O’Malley broke his two-fight losing streak by securing a unanimous decision victory against Song Yadong. Afterwards, ‘Suga’ expressed interest in a rematch with two-time and current UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan.

However, with Yan most likely booked to fight Merab Dvalishvili, O’Malley has agreed to wait for another title shot. At the post-fight presser he said:

“I’m chilling. When they make that fight, I’m chilling.”
