Ilia Topuria has called for a confrontation with boxing Great Terence Crawford, but a UFC hunter does not think it is a good idea.
Topuria has certainly seen its stock thanks to stellar versions against Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira. “El Matador” is a former UFC -Fedweight title holder, who left the gold to eventually conquer the lightweight championship. Many believe that Topuria has taken a page from the playbook of Conor McGregor, and his callout from “Bud” Crawford is an example of that.
While Topuria has expressed confidence in his ability to disrupt the newly striked super middleweight champion in a boxing ring, Michael Chiesa told Mmajunkie.com That he is not a fan of the Fantasy Matchup.
“Absolutely not,” said Chiesa. “We lost Conor McGregor after the Floyd Mayweather -battle. That is not the goal with Zuffa Boxing. In essence, that would be if we withdraw Topuria in that space, that would mean that that part of their mo. Look, something can happen. Floyd is different from not knowing a master that is that CraWford is not that.
“He was good at taking Jabs, pricks nice, selling his brand a bit a bit. ‘Bud’ sells his brand because he can fight downright. He is just damn good, and Floyd was just as good. And Ilia is not a conor. To make that fight happen, two hunters from two different worlds are needed that attract everyone’s attention.”
UFC CEO Dana White has made it clear that he does not want his hunters to dive into the sweet science. White made an exception in 2017 to help determine the stage for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor. Despite the fact that he has tried a firmer understanding of boxing promotion nowadays, White has not changed his attitude.
