Iga Swiatek, the third seed, defeated Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to reach her first Cincinnati Open final. The post had her hands full in the early stages of the 98 -minute game, but benefited from a sudden dip in the form of Rybakina to win four consecutive games and close the first set before the second was relaxed.
“That was a tough game,” said Swiateek. “In the beginning the level was pretty crazy. We played so fast that sometimes we couldn’t even run to the second ball. But I was there to play with intensity and good quality and I am super happy with the performance. I have served much better, so it certainly helped and I would not change anything.”
In the final, Swiatek plays the Italian seventh seed, Jasmine Paolini, who defeated the Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Paolini served in the second set before the game to see her advantage slip away, but in the end she completed the task, with Kudermetovas count of 75 not -forced errors that cost her.
In the first semifinal, Rybakina, the ninth seed, used a Cross-Court Forehand that caught the line for a break and was then held for a 5-3 lead in the first set, but a targeted Swiatek came back from the abyss and attacked the Kazakh to draw 5-5. From there, the Wimbledon champion kept Serve before she completed the opening set when she broke for the second time after an attempt by Rybakina Backhand came short.
Rybakina, who enjoyed a rapid victory against the world Nr. Swiatek stood opposite some resistance from Rybakina three games later, but dug deep to recover from 15-40 to protect her serve and reach 5-2 before she served it when Rybakina sent a forehand back.
Swiatek, who has not lost a set in Cincinnati, will look for her second title in her last three tournaments. She won Wimbledon when she won Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 aside in the final and then lost against Clara Tauson van Denmark in the fourth round in Toronto.
Swiatek will be a tough favorite in the final on Monday while she seems to be going to open to the US with another title under her belt. She is 5-0 in matches against Paolini, including in the French Open final last year.
“Everyone who will be in the final will be super tough,” said Swiateek. “I will just concentrate on myself and try to continue the work I did. I feel that I have been advanced at this tournament.”
