The BCCI is said to have raised the issue of Naqvi’s possession of the Asia Cup trophy during the meeting. After several members of the ICC emphasized the importance of India and Pakistan in the cricket economy, a committee was formed with the aim of the Indian team lifting the trophy at the earliest.
The deadlock over the Asia Cup prize row was not part of the official agenda. Therefore, no minutes were taken relating to the matter. The meeting was primarily held to discuss issues such as the expansion of the Women’s World Cup, the Olympic Games and the appointment of Mithali Raj to the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee.
For those who don’t know, Suryakumar Yadav & Co. refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi at the end of the final due to the insensitive comments he made about the cross-border tensions between the two countries. The BCCI had filed a formal request to resolve the matter. However, the problem remains unresolved so far.
The meeting also determined the expansion of the next edition of the Women’s World Cup, which will take place in 2029. The media statement also revealed the number of people who gathered at the venues, as well as those who watched the matches digitally.
“The ICC Board, keen to build on the success of the event, agreed to expand the next edition of the tournament to 10 teams (from 8 teams by 2025). Nearly 300,000 fans watched the event in stadiums, breaking the record for tournament attendance at any women’s cricket event. The tournament also witnessed a growth in viewership and new records were set for screen audiences around the world, with almost 500 million viewers in India,” said an ICC press release. ICC.
