Wesley Sneijder never reached the English coast, but it was not because of a lack of trying, with two Premier League clubs were seductive to secure the enigmatic Dutch playmaker in his heyday
For years, Wesley Sneijder was the elusive Phantom of the Premier League. The icon of Inter Milan and the Netherlands was constantly connected to movements to England, where Manchester United, Liverpool and others invest seriously and effort in the pursuit of the Mercurial midfielder.

His decision almost pursued him, while the Reds, albeit, the doomed, Premier League title in 2013/14 under Brendan Rodgers, derailed by Steven Gerrard’s notorious slip against Chelsea. In Istanbul, Sneijder’s Gamble paid dividends, as he sent Galatasaray to eight large trophies, including two super lying titles and three Turkish cups. Thinking about the Manchester United Saga, Sneijder revealed that conversations with the Red Devils gained strength in 2010, but abrupt collapse. It was only years later, during a casual encounter between his father and the legendary former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, that the truth arose behind the failed transfer and sheds light on one of the large ‘Wat-IFS’ of modern football.
“I didn’t know the reason – I didn’t ask my agent. He just said she [United] No more called and I believed it. But many years later, like five or six years later, my father was in Manchester with a friend of his, and they walked into a place where Sir Alex Ferguson was.
“And he spoke to my father and he said he was interested in me, that he wanted to sign me, but that there was a problem with the agent. So that was the problem – that I never knew before. That is the information I have now.
“It would clearly have been a great step. After winning everything to go to a big club like Man United would have been great. But also, I had a great time at Inter Milan, and then I had a great step to Galatasaray … It just didn’t happen.”
Sneijder, now 40, launched his legendary career at Ajax and Huste his vessel for a high -profile transfer from 2007 to Real Madrid. In his debut season he won the La Liga title, but the arrival of the second Galacticos era – with his head by Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema – pushed him out in 2009.
However, revenge came quickly, as Sneijder, under Jose Mourinho, new club helped to beat a famous Treble, covered by a 2-0 Champions League -Laatste Triumph over Bayern Munich in the Bernabeu -his former house. After securing six large titles in the San Siro in three and a half years, he joined Galatasaray before he stints at Nice and Qatari-Outfit al-Gharafa.
Internationally Sneijder’s 134 Caps – a Dutch record – saw him shine at six major tournaments. His peak came at the 2010 World Cup, where he led the Netherlands to the final, claimed joint-top scorer distinctions and earned the silver ball as the second best player of the tournament.
The career of Sneijder, defined by trophies and near-miss, remains proof of his non-reversing striving for glory about Glamor. While the allure of the Premier League never really faded, his choice to chase success in the avid football cauldrons of Milan and Istanbul about the uncertain promises of England that his instinct for winning was just as sharp as his game.
