It may sound like torture but having needles stuck in your cheeks, chin and forehead is a secret of the A-list for younger, glowing skin.
The practice, known as a facial acupuncture, is advertised as a ‘natural botox’ – and of course celebrities from Kim Kardashian to Gwyneth Paltrow fans.
The treatment includes the insertion of ultrafine needles in the face, which, according to the proponents, stimulates the production of collagen, improves blood circulation and facilitates muscle tension.
This helps to reduce fine lines, lift the weak skin and give a brighter, more youthful complexion – or so does the theory.
Some also believe that it helps with jaw voltage, ramparts and even hormonal acne.
And unlike cosmetic injectables, it does not freeze expressions or lets you a meaningful pillow face back-in-place, it will be on its own healing mechanisms of the body to rejuvenate the skin from the inside, of course.
To be honest, at the age of 45 this all sounds attractive – and I have been a strong supporter of acupuncture, because I found it effective of hay fever, during a particularly bad fight.
So when I was offered to try a session with Lori Bell, also known as ‘The Good Witch’ – in De Standaard Spa, Miami – I had to say yes.

What is the problem … and where is the solution?
Someone once told me, at some point you will look either older. Or, if you have done a lot of cosmetic work, weird.
Those are the two options. You will never be able to do anything, really, which makes you look considerably younger.
And watching older is no problem – I hope that younger people see and think, there is someone who has lived a little and knows what things know.
But that does not mean that you have to stop trying to make the best out of yourself – and in all respects, facial acupuncture can work a little magic.
With this is spirit, I go to the standard Spa, Miami Beach.
The hotel occupies a restored gem from the 1950s on Belle Isle, originally built as the Monterrey Motel of the famous architect Norman Giller-a key figure in the architectural movement of Miami in Miami.
It later became Lido Spa Hotel, a revolutionary wellness -retreat from the 60s, known for its strict regimes of diet, exercise and medical supervision.
Nowadays, the building retains many of its original charm thinking of low-rise white-covered bungalows and palm-omzoomed tropical gardens with a modern, bohemian turn.
The standard hotel chain was founded in 1998 by business magnate Andre Balasz, whose is linked to actress Uma Thurman and the Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue
De Standaard is also known for its Edgy Branding and famous clientele, with its Miami outside post as a hotspot in the nightlife for young and glamorous of the city.
One infamous advertisement contained a woman who urinated on a plush rug; More recently, the hotel was confronted with a recoil for a cocaine theme cocktail served in a bag with a rolled up banknote.
What is the treatment?
I am booked to have 90 minutes of acupuncture facial display ($ 275 or about £ 207) that invoicing them as ‘a natural, healthy facelift’.
The session starts with a long -lasting chat about my lifestyle – covering all the usual points, what I eat and when, how much I sleep, how my stress levels are, things like that.
Lori practices a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that is known as acupuncture of five elements – a system based on the idea that our physical and emotional health is determined by the balance of five natural elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.
Each element corresponds to specific organs and emotions, and the treatment is intended to restore the harmony in between, to treat the cause of disease rather than just the symptoms.
Our conversation, she explains, will help her needles.
And then it’s on the way to the right treatment. For those who have never had acupuncture, it is undoubtedly discouraging.

But the truth is that you feel nothing. More than 15 minutes or so Lori places about 40 needles in my face, hands, arms, legs and feet.
I don’t really feel like something, although I am vaguely conscious when I adjust myself to the treatment table.
Lori is talking and explains what the different points connect with and … I am not sure what else is drifting because I am drifting.
At the end of the session I was left to wander around the beautiful tiled spa facility – steams, showers and saunas and the like.
I meet friends for dinner and they all, without requesting, agree that I look incredibly good for a middle -aged guy with Jetlag.
And I should agree – I was in fact pretty shocked by my lack of Eyebags.
It also temporarily reduced my persistent raw rosacea-sensitive face.
Like I said, I am a fan of acupuncture – if I have a sports injury, I have a few sessions for pain lighting, who agree on medical studies that it can offer it.
This year the pollen is particularly in common, so I will have a top-up session of hay fever treatment that it will solve, what it will solve.
There is no scientific evidence that it works, and I know people who have tried and said it didn’t help, but it works for me.
Was it a ‘natural facelift? I wouldn’t go that far. But would I have it again for cosmetic reasons? Yes.
