A tourist from Assam, who survived the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, shared the moment of meeting the terrorist with India Today.
Association teacher Debasish Bhattacharyya at Assam University, who was in Pahalgam with his family, shared how he escaped when he came face to face one of the terrorists.
“We were under the tree when I heard people mutter with the Kalma. I became a member of the instinctive member,” he said.
“A terrorist walked towards me. Then he looked at me and asked: ‘What are you doing? ‘
In response, Bhattacharyya loudly started reciting the Kalma.
“He asked me:” What are you saying? “I kept repeating La Ilaha Illallah … For some reason he turned and left,” he remembered.
“I was not immediately asked to recite the Kalma, but I heard others do it under the tree and I followed them.” I heard the man ask someone if they took ‘ram name’, “Bhattacharyya added.
The Assam government has intervened to make agreements for Bhattacharya and the safe return of his family.
“The return of the whole family to the state is regularly priority and the government of Assam has contact with GOVT from India to bring the family back to Assam as quickly as possible,” the office of the Assam Chief Minister on X.
The professor confirmed that he is with his family and they are all safe and is expected to reach Srinagar on 26 April.
The terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday, which claimed 26 lives, left the country in shock and fear. The resistance front (TRF), a spur of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.
In response, India has reduced its diplomatic relations with Pakistan by suspending various strategic regulations, including the Treaty of Indus Waters and Saarc Visa exemption for Pakistani nationals.
