Speaking on a podcast with former Indian tennis great Sania Mirza, the Chandigarh native said he felt he didn’t feel respected and supported enough to continue. He also noted that after an illustrious career, he had nothing left to prove to anyone else.
“I wasn’t enjoying my game. I felt like, why am I playing cricket if I don’t enjoy it? I didn’t feel supported. I didn’t feel respected. And I thought, why do I have to do this when I don’t have this? Why do I get stuck in something I don’t like? Why do I have to play? To prove what? I can’t do more than this, mentally or physically, and it was killing me. And the day I quit, I was myself again,” he said. Yuvraj in an interaction on the talk show.
Yuvraj also recalled the phase of his cricket career during his teenage years when cricketer and commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu had written off the former, and also how Yuvraj’s father Yograj Singh had taken the ex-India opener’s comments personally.
“Looking back now, I don’t think he had the time to look at me properly. He was just being nice to my father. Then of course he was playing for India, so he probably would have said that. I was 13-14 years old at the time and just discovering a sport. I don’t take it personally, but my father took it personally,” he noted.
Yuvraj is considered one of them Indiathe best cricketers. He finished with 11,778 runs and 148 wickets across all formats at the top level. He was also a very good fielder during his playing days and contributed to numerous memorable catches and moments of fielding. Apart from his famous six sixes in an over match against Stuart Broad in 2007, fans still revere the 44-year-old for his World Cup heroics in 2011.
