Gary Lineker is stunned by part of the criticism of Liverpool in the early weeks of the season.
The Premier League champions started defending their title with five consecutive victories (including matches against Newcastle Away, Arsenal and Everton) and also made a winning start of their Champions League campaign last week.
However, some experts are clearly not impressed by the Reds because of their remarkable dependence on late goals to secure most of those victories, in which Paul Merson claims that the side of Arne should be ‘halfway the table’ and ‘six points are gifted’.
Lineker bewildered by criticism of Liverpool
In the latest episode of The rest is footballSaid Alan Shearer that Liverpool did not play particularly well in the Merseyside Derby during the weekend, but he believes that their ability to achieve successive victories is a ‘positive’ instead of a care.
Lineker voted for emphasis and said: “It’s not worried at all. If you do that if you don’t fly absolutely and you have won five out of five, I don’t understand why people say this is a problem for them.
“I think it’s a bonus because you also cherish in new players and you work out your best team. Slot tries to get the balance with different players.
“I think it is really positive. I don’t see a negative side in it. Of course you want to go all the rifles, play glorious football and win 5-0, but we all know that football is not the case. It is never.”
Lineker makes a valid point about the integration of new players
Lineker has reached a striking point that many experts who have been critical of Liverpool seem to ignore – Slot is still trying to integrate various new players in the team, and it can clearly take time for congenital chemistry to form with embryonic relationships on the field.
That can explain why Florian Wirtz still has to score for the Reds in seven-Steve Nicol matches that he was ‘disappointed’ with how the German started the season, but the 22-year-old offered a glimpse of what he can offer with his devastating threat to the counterattack.
The Merseysiders looked excellent in the first half of their two most recent matches against Atletico Madrid and Everton, and although the subsequent drop-off in both luminaires can be a reason for concern, there are signs that the new-look team starts clicking.
If – as we would like to think – Liverpool still has a few gears to reach the entire fall, it is possible that they can approach the middle third of the season with a emphatic lead in the Premier League.
By winning five top matches on the bounce, the Reds have already surpassed their longest winning series from the title-winning 2024/25 campaign, and there were numerous victories in the previous period that were fought just as hard as those in the past few weeks.
Lineker is absolutely right – if you win consistently, there is much more reason to be cheerful than worried.
