I bought a good bike and now I will be even more efferves – Jalopnik

Hello, I am Amber Dasilva. You may remember such recordings as “Motorcycles are perfectly good all year round” and “you really need nothing bigger than a Kei car.” As the resident of Jalopnik Tiny-vehicle Proselytizer, I am always talking about how smaller vehicles are better for traffic, the environment and the general society in general, and now I take what perhaps the last step in that pipeline is: coming around through a bicycle. I’m going to be so unbearable.

I was considering following the Collin Woodard route, getting myself a chic e-bike, but it turns out that they are difficult to find with a car journalist-salary-nog more difficult when you have New York apartment requirements, such as a removable battery for entry. So, instead of something that is electric, I ended with a simpler daily driver: my shiny new Orbea Terra H40, the bike that (hopefully) shows me that I will finally understand gravel bikes.

What is the deal with gravel bikes?

Before I worked at Jalopnik, before I moved to Brooklyn, I was a mountain biker. I never understood the gravel bikes that I would see on the paths; Even from the dropper post-decorated chair of my hardtail, the idea to get rid of a rigid fork was never much sense. However, I live here, I understand the use case much more. A drop-bar racing bike with some extra tire for hopping sidewalks, holes and cobblestones? Perfect.

My specific gravel bike comes from Orbea, an employee Coöpert in Spain. It is not the lightest for its price, but a sale online made it the cheapest way to get drop bars, hydraulic brakes and a high-quality group set (the chic cycling word for a powertrain). Even Facebook Marketplace couldn’t give me a better price, and nothing on the market had a front fork that looked like it was covered with sprinkles.

Small is good

When I started at Jalopnik, I had a 2014 scion FR-S. That made way for my incredibly short -lived track Miata, which then disappeared for a series of motorcycles. Now, finally, the Orbea fills the hole that has been left through my old mountain bike – almost every vehicle smaller than the previous one. This is not an accident, but I think a natural consequence of writing cars for years. Constant exposure to the news means constant exposure to the ailments of infrastructure built up around private vehicle possession, and ultimately you simply want to completely unsubscribe.

I still love my motorcycle, it doesn’t leave the fleet, but I still know every time I drive it No better for the planet than a car. Moreover, in traffic it is a slower way to get to New York than my small bike – the smaller, lighter, cheaper, greener option is also often faster. Isn’t it nice if things work that way? Am I unbearable enough about this bike, or should I start buying Lycra?
