Ipswich town have confirmed that goalkeeper Alex Palmer is on the sidelines after suffering a calf injury against Charlton Athletic.

Tuesday night was one to forget for Ipswich Town, who suffered a worrying defeat to Charlton Athletic.

The Tractor Boys dominated the first half but failed to find the net and a thrilling start to the second saw the Addicks race to a 3-0 win. Quickfire goals from Sonja Carey and Macauley Gillesphey turned the game on its head, before Miles Leaburn sealed the win just 20 minutes after the restart.

Things went from bad to worse for Ipswich when goalkeeper Alex Palmer limped off after just 24 minutes and was forced to watch from the touchline as his side slumped to a second successive defeat.

Now the news has gotten even worse for ITFC, as has Palmer’s injury confirmed. The ‘keeper will be out for ‘a few weeks’ with the calf injury suffered against Charlton Athletic.

Ipswich Town have already taken action after the injury was confirmed. The club have recalled 20-year-old goalkeeper Henry Gray from his short-term loan at Braintree Town.

A disaster for Ipswich Town, which was already out of control

Since his arrival in the winter, Alex Palmer has proven to be a reliable presence between the posts for Ipswich Town, finally ending the club’s long-standing goalkeeping dilemma at Portman Road.

He is one of the few players who seems to have a guaranteed place in Kieran McKenna’s strongest XI. It will be a major concern for Town fans that he has to be ruled out through injury.

As Ipswich look to rediscover form and regain confidence in their promotion bid, establishing a consistent starting line-up could be key to regaining momentum and unity after a summer of transition. The loss of Palmer will deprive them of a reliable target figure, one crucial to maintaining stability and cohesion at the back.

A huge opportunity for the former number one

Palmer’s injury will open the door for Christian Walton to regain his place as ITFC goalkeeper. He has been out of the squad since 2023 and now has a huge opportunity with Ipswich Town struggling.

He looked confident of retaining his place as Ipswich Town’s goalkeeper before a long-term injury sidelined him and halted his momentum. Since then, Walton has fallen down the pecking order, unable to regain the form that once made him a regular starter.

Now, however, the 29-year-old could get his first long-term spell in the side. Walton will be keen to shake off the rust and show he can be a reliable replacement for Palmer, and a goalkeeper capable of performing at the level required for a Championship team chasing promotion.
