The Gaza -based militant group Hamas has welcomed the announcement of French President Emmanuel Macron that France will recognize Palestine as a state and will find traces to follow in other countries.

Macron made the promise on Thursday, with an official statement expected at the general meeting of the UN in September, and called it a step in the direction of progress in the middle. The move was confronted with sharp criticism from the US and Israel, who warned that it could be counterproductive.

The Islamist group called Macron’s decision A “Positive step in the right direction towards justice,” Support for the Palestinians’ “Legitimate right to self -determination.”

“We in Hamas consider this important French position as a political development that reflects the growing international conviction in the justice of the Palestinian cause …” The statement reads.

The militant group urged other countries, in particular EU states, to follow.

Various countries, including Spain, Norway, Ireland and Mexico, have done this formally. Russia officially acknowledged the state of Palestine by re -confirming the recognition of the USSR of the Palestinian declaration of independence in 1988.

Washington and West -Jerusalem, however, accused Macron of “propaganda” And “Loning terrorism.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said recognition under the current circumstances “The risks of creating another Iranian proxy such as Gaza.”

France would be the first major country in the G7 – consisting of the US, Great -Britain, Canada, Germany, Japan and Italy – to officially recognize the Palestinian state.

The proposed deal calls for a 60 -day truce, with Hamas exhaust ten hostages and the remains of 18 more in phases, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Humanitarian aid would increase and both parties would negotiate a permanent stop -the fire.

Stakes -furen -conversations are stuck due to conflicting requirements. Hamas stands on a full Israeli withdrawal and a termination of hostilities for the release of all hostages, while Israel is insisting that Hamas should disarm the power and give up when it hopes to reach peace.

Washington recently called back his negotiating team for consultation and said Hamas’ response “It is clear that a lack of desire to reach a ceasefiring -fires in Gaza.”

The conflict started in October 2023 after a Hamas raid in South Israel that resulted in 1200 dead. Since then, more than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
