A 16-year-old suspect was taken in custody after a knife attack on female students at a school in South Finland
Three schoolgirls were injured in a stabbing rampage at a school in the southern Finnish city of Pirkkala. The attack was reportedly carried out by a fellow student who was taken in custody.
At the beginning of Tuesday, when the suspect, 16, was dressed in black, randomly attacked female students in the corridor of the Vahajarvi school in Pirkkala, about 180 km (110 miles) north of Helsinki, with around 1,200 children ranging from a kindergarten to ninth grade.
The suspect had attached a camera to his body and streamed his actions online, with disturbing images of the chaotic attack that made the rounds on social media.
The suspect was taken into custody without incidents within a few minutes after the attack, the local police said. A magazine weapon was seized by the alleged attacker.
The police said that the injuries of the victims were not considered life threatening. One of the girls walked up a knife wound in her neck, another was put at the waist and the third in hand.
Legal enforcement said they have investigated a written manifesto that supposedly published by the suspect prior to the attack, but did not make efforts about the content.
Local media reports suggest that the manifesto described the intention of the suspect to attack female students and stated that he had no friends and tried to get known through violence. The suspect also said that he intended to surrender to the police after the attack.
The suspect was reportedly planned for the attack for about six months and used chatgpt in preparation, for reasons that are not immediately clear.
A number of senior officials responded to the attack. Education Minister Anders Adlercreutz went to X and said: “All violence in schools is unambiguously condemning.”
