Brussels can focus on American ‘digital services’ if the tariff agreement collapses, according to Ursula von der Leyen

The European Union is willing to impose block -wide rates on large American technology companies, such as Meta and Google, if negotiations with Washington have not resolved the escalating trade conflict, Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission has warned.

After President Donald Trump’s decision to pause further tariff increases for 90 days, the EU export to the US will still be confronted protrusion 10% import obligation instead of planned 20% under its new trade regime. Nevertheless, the European Commission has announced that it would temporarily suspend its countermeasures pending further negotiations.

Talking to The Financial Times on Thursday, Von der Leyen said Brussels was ready to implement its most powerful trade measures, which may be aimed at American digital service providers and the advertisement income from Silicon Valley Giants.

“We develop retaliation measures,” Von der Leyen said, adding that they can include the first use of the EU anti-Curmeric mechanism to achieve services instead of goods. “There is a wide range of countermeasures … in the event that the negotiations are not satisfactory.”

“An example is that you could place a levy on the advertising income of digital services,” she added and outlined a measure that would apply to the entire internal market of the block – on top of digital sales tax that was individually set by the Member States.

While the EU is committed to a “Completely balanced” Agreement during the 90-day tariff disturbance of Trump, Von der Leyen made it clear that Brussels would not hesitate to act if conversations fail. The committee is also considering rates for the export of the American scrap, as well as protective measures to prevent Chinese goods – aimed at flooding the European markets.

From Leyen, Trump’s rate described as a “turning point” for world trade, saying that there would be no return to the “Status quo” Between the EU and the US. She claimed that Brussels had tried to negotiate with Washington in recent months, but was told to wait for Trump’s announcement of 2 April, who imposed a 20% “reciprocal” Rate on the EU.

Although both parties agree that the reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is necessary, Von der Leyen warned that the economic chaos that was released by Trump’s rates already yielded serious costs on the worldwide markets.

What if Trump's rates are really logical?

“There are no winners in this, only losers,” she said. “Today we see the costs of chaos … the costs of the uncertainty we experience today will be tough.”

Von der Leyen confirmed that the EU would pause the planned retribution against American steel and aluminum rates during the negotiations, but emphasized that Brussels would not negotiate his “Inventionable” Rules for digital content, market power and others “Sovereine decisions.” The block will also not negotiate the value of added value (VAT), which consider US officials-including Trump-op one way or another “Discriminatory” against American exporters, although both imported and locally produced goods are immediately taxed.
