Eddie Howe has admitted he ‘can’t really defend the performance’ after Newcastle lost 3-1 at West Ham.
The Magpies suffered a major setback on Sunday after defeat at the London Stadium. It remains an inconsistent start to the season for Newcastle, who have failed to win consecutive Premier League games.
Newcastle led within four minutes through Jacob Murphy’s goal, but fell behind at half-time when Lucas Paqueta rifled home an equalizer before Sven Botman’s own goal gave the Hammers the lead.
Tomas Soucek sealed victory for West Ham during the stoppage time break as the home side won their first home Premier League game since February.
A defeat leaves Newcastle thirteenth in the Premier League and five points behind the top four. Howe admitted to Sky Sports that there were few positives.
“I can’t really defend the performance, it was really disappointing after that start. I thought we had the game under control but we didn’t. We let West Ham in with some uncharacteristic mistakes.”
“Collectively we were off today and you could see it. We caused ourselves problems. We are extremely disappointed and frustrated with ourselves because we missed a huge opportunity for back-to-back wins.”
“The feeling of the team was wrong. We lacked physicality today.
“I have to step away and think about it. This falls into the category where we haven’t performed. This was a bad performance, but they happen. It leaves us bridging a gap and we can only do that with consistency and we haven’t found that this season.”
