What makes this photo great?

The death of a first responder is an in -depth loss – they risk their lives daily and never know if they return home.

This image imposes a moment of collective mourning: fellow first responds and volunteers from the Red Cross are in solemn greetings, along both sides of the road when the ambulance passes by. The flashy lights, filled in in tribute, guide the last trip of Chicago Fire Department Capt. David Meyer.

Above them, the red and white stripes of the American flag golf, symbolize the service and sacrifice they have made for their community. This is a last, powerful act of respect.

How did you get the shot?

During the procession, the ambulance that carries the cases quickly- you only get one moment to record it. Planning the corner is crucial.

Before the ambulance arrived, I tested various positions to visualize potential recordings. My goal was to frame three elements: the greeting of fellow first responds, the ambulance that transported their fallen colleague and the American flag over the head. I noticed space behind the flag carriers and squatted low to position the flag as a background.

Through this angle I was able to all three components – salitating hands, the passing ambulance and the flag – a single, coherent tribute to Meyer’s service in layers.
