How to watch the Olympics for free (or very cheap).

3 minutes, 57 seconds Read

The Winter Olympics start on February 6 and end on February 22, with some preliminary events starting as early as February 4.

This year the United States Olympics will be broadcast on NBC, which means you’ll need Peacock if you want to stream it.

There are a few ways you can get it for free or very cheap:

Table of contents
  1. Buy an OTA antenna
  2. Watch international streams
  3. Amex Platinum Digital Entertainment Credit
  4. Peacock Student and Young Adult Discount
  5. Peacock Premium included with these services
    1. Xfinity customers
    2. Spectrum TV customers
    3. Instacart+ customers

Buy an OTA antenna

An Over-the-air (OTA) antenna is exactly what it sounds like: an antenna that receives the broadcast signal over the air. If you want free local content, your best bet is to get one of these and have some luck, as the Olympics will be broadcast on your local NBC affiliate.

Go to Rabbit ears to see where the station’s channels are and hopefully you have an NBC network nearby. Our closest one is in Baltimore, almost 20 miles away, and offers good signal strength.

OTA antennas can be cheap or more expensive, it all depends on what you need, if power is required, etc. I would order a few, see if they work and return the one that doesn’t!

When I asked ChatGPT what the best ones were for me after submitting my Rabbit Ears report, it suggested:

Watch international streams

There will be free coverage of the Olympic Games via the British BBC iPlayer, Canada’s CBC gemAnd Australia’s 9Now…which is great if you live in those countries.

If you want to access it, you’ll need to get a VPN and go through another country’s servers. So for the BBC iPlayer you have to be in Great Britain.

Proton VPN is a free VPN that works fine, but the free version does not allow you to choose the country. The free service randomly places you in one of 10 countries (of which only Canada qualifies you for free Olympic coverage through the players listed above)

You will have to switch servers until you get the right one. And you have to wait between switching servers (and it’s many minutes).

You can pay for it Proton VPN ($9.99/month) or Nord VPN ($3.39/month) to choose your country.

Amex Platinum Digital Entertainment Credit

If you have an American Express Platinum Card, it comes with a $300 digital entertainment credit. That’s $25 in credits when you use the card to pay for Disney+, a Disney+ bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Paramount+, Peacock, The Wall Street Journal, YouTube Premium, and YouTube TV.

If you have the card, you probably already know about this benefit and it includes Peacock.

Peacock Student and Young Adult Discount

If you’re a student and have a .EDU email address, you can get Peacock for $5.99 per month for 12 months, instead of the usual $10.99. Verification is done via SheerID.

If you are 18 to 24 years old and not a student, you can get the same discount as long as you can verify your age.

Peacock Premium included with these services

If you have Xfinity, Spectrum or Instacart Plus, you may get a free subscription as a perk.

Xfinity customers

If you’re an Xfinity customer, check to see if your plan gives you free Peacock Premium. There are various internet service packages that include Peacock Premium as a free extra. You’ll have to go to xfinity.com/activate-peacock to activate it.

If you are a Diamond or Platinum Xfinity Rewards member, you can redeem a reward for a free Peacock Premium subscription.

Spectrum TV customers

If you’re a Spectrum TV Select customer, you can get the ad-based Peacock Premium in your package. This is the same package that includes free ad-supported Disney Plus, AMC Plus, Max, Paramount Plus, ESPN PLus and ViX. Activate it here.

Instacart+ customers

If you’re an Instacart+ customer, Peacock is included as one advantage.

Here’s where it gets fun: There are several ways you can get Instacart+ for free, either during a trial period or through a partnership they have with a credit card.
