The recovery of the monument in Piazza Cinque Days continues, a symbol of the rebellion of 1848 against the Austrian domain. The initiative, promoted by the municipality of Milan in collaboration with Labanof (University of Milan) and IRCCS Foundation Ca ‘Granda Maggiore Polyclinic Hospital, not only focuses not only the preservation of the monument, but also on the study of the human remains in the underlying crypt.
Since last fall, the monument has been made by the sculptor Giuseppe Grandi surrounded by the jetty to make accurate restoration work possible. The first studies have confirmed the use of different bronze alloys to obtain different chromatic effects between the obelisk and the five female figures around it. The internal analysis of the obelisk, made with a microcamere, has also unveiled not published construction details and will have restorers access within the structure for the first time.
At the same time, the Labanof leads a study into the human remains of the crypt, whereby anthropological analysis and historical studies are combined with the archive transcriptions of the Polyclinic Milan. The goal is to identify the victims and reconstruct their stories, to return dignity to the cases of the five days.
The analysis of the remains, not without difficulties with regard to their preservation and mixing, takes place with advanced technologies and methods that have already been applied in cases of massive disasters, such as LINAT RAMP or SREBRENICA common wells. This study offers a lake in -thieving perspective on the events of 1848 and on the historical management of the victims, which improves an invaluable value for collective memory.
