Chart Hills Golf Club has solidified its reputation as one of the country’s top golf destinations, recently being ranked in Golf World’s top 100 courses in England.
However, there appears to be limited information about the strategies and efforts that led to this achievement. To gain insight, I Interviewed Anthony Tarchetti, the general manager of Chart Hills Golf Clubto discuss the approaches that have contributed to this recognition.
Hills Has undergone a remarkable transformation since Ramac Holdings took over the property in 2019. What was the long-term strategy and business purpose behind this investment?
When we purchased Chart Hills on Christmas Eve 2019, our goal was to Bring the course back to a standard We could all be proud of it and ideally make it even better than before.
At that stage, the course struggled with poor drainagemeaning it was effectively unplayable from November to March.
Since then Every part of the property has been improved. The sand covered fairways now provide firm, consistent surfaces all year round and we have returned to the Golf World Top 100 rankings in England.
Our agronomic reports are the strongest They have ever been and every season the course continues to evolve.
Ultimately our ambition is To create a location that delivers a first-class experience For members and visitors, and one that everyone is connected to hills can be proud of.
Chart Hills has also benefited from continued agronomic support from the R&A. How does that partnership work in practice?
We’re lucky to have closure Working relationship with Alistair Beggs and the R&A agronomy team. Alistair visits the club twice a year Conduct a full assessmentand we also send soil samples for analysis.
The R&A then offers a Detailed report that helps shape our agronomic strategy for the coming year, from Sand applications and fungicide top dressing programs and spray schedules.
Us Green Keeping Teamwhich usually exists between between 12 and 15 staff members, Depending on the season, you use that guidance as a framework to maintain and improve the course.
Of course, the British weather sometimes forces us to adapt, but that Partnership has been extremely valuable in maintaining consistency and raising standards across the property.
Sir Nick Faldo’s name remains synonymous with Chart Hills. What role does he continue to play in the course today?
Sir Nick’s name will always remain above the door. This is his design and any refinements we make are done through his team to ensure it stays true to his original vision.
The only situation that would ever change would be a complete redesignthat’s not something we’re considering.
He has been excellent to work with since Ramac took overvisiting three times in recent years. It’s clear he has a genuine love for the place, which means a lot, especially as this is now his only golf course in the UK.
Maintaining that relationship is really important to us; Sir Nick is one of the most recognizable figures in British golf, and his continued association adds great prestige to the club.
Looking ahead, what are the future plans for Chart Hills?
Our ambition is to Keep climbing the rankings and on time, Put on tournament dolphin to the location. Just as importantly, we want to continue to improve the experience for our members and guests.
The recent opening of The barnour first phase of on site accommodationhas been a huge success and is already proving popular with visiting golfers.
Long term, we want to expand that side of the business and Further develop the hills as a complete golf destination.
When you think about where the course was in 2020 and see what has been achieved in just four and a half years, it is remarkable.
That is due to the vision and investment of Ramac, who are committed to making maps of hills something very special.
The Feedback from members and visitors continues to improve Year after year, and that is the best indicator that we are on the right track.
