On his return to the Indian team, Kishan has impressed with his aggressive approach and consistency at the top, making a strong case for himself as India look to finalize their squad ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Chasing a modest target of 154 in the third T20I, Samson got out on a golden duck, marking his third successive failure in the ongoing series. Coincidentally, Kishan has regained his mojo, scoring a match-winning half-century and a quick cameo in Guwahati.
Now questions are being raised about Ishan replacing the Kerala batsman in the World Cup XI once Tilak Varma returns. As he thought about this, Ashiwn gave his opinion.
“It’s debatable. I know Sanju personally and I have a personal relationship with him, having played with him for three years in Rajasthan. He’s a decent cricketer and he hasn’t always been given enough chances. Now he’s getting chances, but honestly, if you look at it carefully, I’m not always in favor of too many changes before the World Cup. I always think keeping things stable really helps,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
He further showed how difficult it will be for the selectors and team management to ignore the Jharkhand batsman’s performance.
“But the way Ishan Kishan is batting, how can you ignore him? Of course it’s about keeping things stable, but how can you ignore him? Whatever has happened, Shubman is a precedent for this. Why was Shubman at that place? Because after seeing the partnership between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, that partnership looked threatening. But the way Ishan Kishan is batting, how can you just ignore it? It’s very tough. So I think she’s a clear have a job ahead of them. If They want to stay stable at Sanju and not make too many changes, that’s understandable. But if they say they want to try changes, if they want to try Ishan Kishan at the top, that’s also a legitimate merit,” he added.
R Ashwin points out a problem with Samson’s batting
The off-spinner further shared his analysis of Samson‘s batting and saw a small pattern that the opener comes out with.
“Just looking at yesterday’s match, the way Sanju came out, there’s a trend emerging. Against England, he was aiming for the body and pulling, eventually getting caught at deep square leg. Now, against New Zealand, if you look at these three T20Is, almost all the balls have hit middle and leg stump. They bowl straight to him, and if it’s short, it’s on the body. That’s an area Sanju Samson definitely needs to work on,” concluded him.
Samson, who has recently been an integral part of the Indian T20I line-up, has struggled to convert starts in the ongoing series, which has once again put emphasis on team selection and role clarity.
