Indianapolis – Aari McDonald has not been with the Indiana fever for a long time. Even, she quickly got a two words Reputation with her teammates and coaches.

Gymrat.

After the training, she is regularly the last to leave the court after she has admitted more shots. At night she walks with her husband to the gym to go on even more shots. And when she is not in the gym, she studies film, whether it is opposing teams or finding out how to get the best out of her own teammates.

It is that preparation level that led to Wednesday, when McDonald hit a career-high 27 points, which led the fever to a third consecutive victory with a 107-101 victory over the Mercury.

“My teammates,” said McDonald, “they spoke like,” Hey, 2, keep photographing. ” So I think tonight I really had something like: “Ok, like this is my time to shine.” ‘

The Phoenix defense, aimed at limiting a red-hot Kelsey Mitchell and colleague All-Star Aliyah Boston, gave up a lot to McDonald. She lived in the paint in the night with seven of her 11 field targets that came on the edge. McDonald also attracted a large number of mistakes and converted to all 10 of her free throw attempts.

Each point was of vital importance for the fever when Mitchell, who entered the game in a 35-point outing against heaven, was limited to a season-lasting eight points. In the meantime, Boston only had five points due to the first three -quarters.

Yet the fever led in the fourth behind McDonald, who scored 23 points through the first three frames. In the fourth, Boston came to life and scored 17 points to help Indiana with a third consecutive victory, in which they match their longest wintreak in a down and down season.

“She has been huge,” said head coach Stephanie White. “Aari gives us another player who can come downhill. Her speed was completely visible today … The possibility of having a player who could be downhill on days that – Kelsey had not had very many days where she had not been able to go to the edge – but on days like today one of them, you have another player who can create another player for himself and others.”

A seamless fit with the fever

When the fever broke the training camp at the beginning of May, McDonald was not on the Roster. She wasn’t even busy each Wnba Rooster, which was cut out of the sparks during the preseason.

McDonald remained fearless in the gym and waited for her time, waiting for a chance to beat. When Clark went down early in the year with a knee injury, McDonald joined the fever through an exemption from the emergency aid, giving her a limited time to make an impact.

It only took one match when McDonald stepped against the mystics and stood out of the jump, so that the fever helped a losing slip at that time. As a rule, however, her first Stint in Indiana was short -lived, because, as soon as the team became healthy again, McDonald could no longer stay on the Roster.

However, after the fever broke up with Dewanna Bonner, a schedule spot and – more importantly – Cap Room became available, and the team drew McDonald almost immediately. In her second game back she went to the starting line -up, a sign of how quickly she is learned with the schedule.

“Aari is a point watch. She has a Point Guard mentality,” said White. “She came to know more than half of our attacking sets.”

The only time that McDonald has since left the starting setup was when Clark briefly returned from an injury. Apart from that three-game stretch, McDonald started with the last nine games before the fever, on average 25.8 minutes per match.

She has also been productive, scored 8.8 points and shifts 5 assists per night to join 1.3 Steals per match. So far, the fever has been almost four points offensive this season per 100 assets with McDonald on the floor versus.

Perhaps the most important thing is that its speed also enables the team to keep playing quickly, a trademark aspect of their attack with Clark Healthy and one that is otherwise difficult to replicate.

And again, all this comes with McDonald that comes to the team several times at the middle of the season. The fact that she is so seamless for the fever has been a huge bonus for a team that has now played more than half of the season with Clark aside.

“I would say as a student of the game,” McDonald said about how she is so seamlessly fit. “Always watch the film, ask questions and just know where my teammates are keeping the ball and sorting ways for them to be successful on the field.

“Everyone encourages me, so I just have to believe. So I just mean to stay in the gym, get stuck and just stay aggressive, that’s the key for me.”

Pushing on postseason -positioning

Both because of the design and necessity, the fever had to wonder when Clark would reach the schedule again. After having spent a large part of the first half of the season in Limbo, waiting for their Superstar Point Guard to return, the fever now again focused on the present.

After opening the second half of the season with a loss that dropped them to .500, the fever was firmly in a fight to even secure a play -off place. That made the beating of the Mercury, currently the number 3 seed, all the bigger one victory on Wednesday.

Now, after their victory, the fever is in the sixth seed. Yet two games are everything that separates their current place and are completely out of the late season. Because of the same token, however, 2.5 games separate them and the suddenly vulnerable freedom for number 2 too.

With just over a month left in the season, almost every match will be important for a fever team that not only fights the play -offs, but goes up the rankings.

Whether it is a match with a team just above them in the rankings, such as Wednesday against Phoenix, or a team just under them in the rankings, such as their victory on the Azen to start the current win -streak, the home issue of the season will see them scratching and claws for their place in the play -offs.

Fortunately for them they have someone in McDonald who has a lot of experience.
