A shift in the Post-US Open ATP ranking has created a new dynamic in the coming September from 12-13 September USA vs. Czehia Davis Cup Series in Delray Beach, Florida.
In the Post-US Open ATP Singles Rankings, released on Monday, September 8, Jiri Lehecka, moved fresh from a quarter-final finish one ranking lock for Countryman Jakub Mensik. Lehecka moved to a career-high ranking of No. 16, one sports better than Mensik at number 17.
What does this mean for Davis Cup?
The way in which the order of Play works is that on the first day in this best-of-five match series the number 1 player of each team plays the number 2 player of the other team on the first day and then the opposite on the second day. Therefore, with this change in rankings of the Czech team, Taylor Fritz, the American number 1 with an ATP ranking list of no. 6, will be confronted with Mensik on the opening day of the game and Frances Tiafoe, the US number 2 with an ATP ranking of No. 29, will counteract Lhecka. It sets up a more intriguing opening round match between Fritz and Mensik, who played an epic semi-final match in the Miami Open, just on the road of the Delray Beach Tennis Center, where Mensik 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4) won. Fritz and Mensik have a career of 1-1 of 1-1, where Fritz won the other meeting in the US Open in 2003 with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 in the third round.
Tiafoe will be the number 2 -American player after both Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul have withdrawn from this match with injuries at the US Open. Tiafoe has a 2-0 advantage of the head compared to Lehecka, their last meeting will be in Cincinnati in 2024 with 6-4, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (5).
The American double team will be Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, the Olympic silver medal winners of the Olympic Games in Paris last summer, which are probably confronted against Tomas Machac and perhaps Lehecka.
This vs. The Czech Republic Davis Cup Tie has been the first in the United States since a series from 2022 against Colombia in Reno, Nevada and the first in Delray Beach since 2003, with the current American Davis Cup captain Bob Bryan, his twin brother Mike and American team members Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish.
