Three hours north of San Francisco, beyond the Redwoods and reliable cell reception, is a deviation from a golf course, one that has never received the memo about exclusivity and exorbitant green reimbursements.
For decades along the Noord -Sonoma Coast, Zeeboerderij -Golf connections offered an invaluable view of the Pacific Ocean on a minimalist layout for more than $ 100 per round. Everyone could play it. Not many people did that. The course drew a loyal band from the locals and a small cult from elsewhere. But on most days you could walk into the Pro store unannounced and have no trouble getting out.
Sea Ranch made little sense in conventional conditions of the golf operator. It didn’t earn money either. Last January the property decided that enough was enough. It closed the course and quoted “non -durable” financial losses. The closure did not count as large national news. But for the locals it cut deep. A group of them gathered and their nine -month campaign has now paid off. Sea Ranch comes back to life.
“There was no opposition,” says Dale Carlsen, an old homeowner of Sea Ranch who helped to lead the effort. “The community was enthusiastic. And we are pleased to welcome people back.”
To understand the death and generation of Sea Ranch, it helps to know a little about their birth. The course took shape in phases – the front nine opened in 1974, the back in 1995 – and, just like the residential community it serves, it was rooted at a clear time in time. Taken care of in the 1960s in the midst of the stirring of the environmental movement, Sea Ranch was considered a place that, in the words of his planners, would work “in harmony with nature”. “Instead of subdivisions, the plan called for clusters of unpainted, wooden Zidee houses, many by remarkable modern architects, all meant to mix in the coastal landscape. The golf course followed the same philosophy. Robert Muir Graves, who designed all 18 holes, explained the routing to the California – even the other way. Ranch famous demanding.
Like many remote areas, Sea Ranch flourished during Covid. Real estate shot up. Although the market has since been established, the median house price in the community was $ 1.3 million from August 2025, according to Redfin. In contrast to many residential communities with Golf, Seawaarders are not assessed a fee to support the course, but many residents pay for an annual golf membership that includes unlimited play.
Sea Ranch is also the home of a lodge, with a restaurant and sea facilities. During the Pandemie, that Lodge and the course were taken over by an investment group with Patrick and John Collinson, the co-founders of the billionaire of the Payment-Services Company, Stripe. Shortly after being taken over, the new ownership renovated the Sea Ranch clubhouse, upgraded the Driving Range and performed maintenance. During a temporary winter closing, it also restructured its membership, which increased the annual contribution from $ 3,500 to $ 5,000.
But that did not come close to balancing the books. In January, when the course was closed, a representative of the Sea Ranch told Golf.com that golf surgery “lost hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.”
The revival of the course called for creative thinking, which led to a solution that fits nicely with the founding philosophy of the community and the course. Carlsen and others involved in the effort have set up a non -profit, North Coast Preservation Society, which rented the course for $ 1 per year. The non -profit organization will focus on the protection of the flora, fauna, view of the coast, recreational use and educational programs. At the same time, an entity with profit motive, North Coast Links, has been set up to take care of business activities. In a recent letter to residents, Sea Ranch Management announced the return of a course “that is unique ownership of this community.”
Even after the January closure, the property kept at work. Conditions, always a Touch Suffy by design, remain on the rough side, so for the time being only a limited game is allowed. Kempersports – who manages selection frameworks as Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley – has been brought in to handle operations. An official reopening is planned for around Thanksgiving, with the exact date to come.
Green reimbursements will rise modestly, but remain a relatively bargain, which is a maximum of $ 85 at the weekend. A new membership plan is also in the making. Apart from a community file, Carlsen says, the goal is to stop Sea Ranch on a wider loop-one journey that can also take in the presidio in San Francisco, Northwood, Alister Mackenzie’s Nine-Holer in the Redwoods from Sonoma County to the South, 80 minutes.
